Abstract

This study investigated the implementation of video recording to improve the students’ ability in presenting opening speech which focused on the content delivery. A classroom action research was used to collect the data from three cycles, and observation. The result showed all students could meet the minimum requirement after doing the process of recording their performance for three cycles.It improved the content delivery significantly after looking at and evaluating the video of performance. Students not only could accomplish the clear purpose of the presentation by introducing the topic clearly, told the thesis statement and preview the points of the speech. Finally, video recording also improved the students’ performance such as movement of gestures and body language, and the eye contact.

Abstract

The application of Curriculum 2013 influenced teaching learning process in schools. Some hours of technology and English subjects in junior high school are decreased. The materials from English book that provided by the government especially for reading are too simple. It needs supplement materials to support the students’ ability in English. The researcher does 4 steps to product the supplement materials, they are: Need Analysis, Identifying the Syllabus, Developing the Material, Expert’ Reviews and Product Try-out. The supplement product aboard with the following criteria: (1) the content is relevant with Curriculum 2013 and students’ level; (2) the procedure in operating is easier for the students; (3) the exercises and feedbacks are clear and relevant with the content; (4) The design is attractive and interesting; (5) the materials should be practical for the students. The materials are found acceptable and appropriate for students at seven grade level as supplement materials.

Abstract

The purpose of current study is improving student grammar ability by applying magic finger method. The strategy is implemented during five meetings, and in the end of meeting the grammar test is administered to get the data. After implementing the strategies in four meetings, grammar test was administered, and the result of the test was more than a half of the students can mention 16 tenses and write simple sentence both in active and passive form. Since the result of the test has met the criteria of success so that the research can be stopped in the first cycle. Another researcher can continue this study in another research design such as experimental or research development study or in another level as like on secondary level.

Abstract

This study investigated predominant learning style of 3rd semester students of English Language Education Program in Faculty of Cultural Studies at Universitas Brawijaya according to gender. Purposive sampling was used for this research and the sampling in this research was 100 students consist of 34 male students and 66 female students taken from 3rd semester English Department students of Faculty of Cultural Studies at Universitas Brawijaya. All participants were administered an Indonesian translated version of Reid’s (1984) Perceptual Learning Style Preference Questionnaire consisting of Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, Tactile, Group, and Individual, included 30 items. This study used quantitative survey design and Microsoft Excel 2007 as the analysis software. The validity and the reliability of this research were calculated by SPSS v.21. The result indicated that predominant male’s learning style was Kinesthetic and estimated by 14 male students (41%) while female students become Kinesthetic and Group and estimated the same percentage, 21 students (332%) for Kinesthetic and 21 (32%) students for Group. The result of the study also shows that both male and female tend to be Kinesthetic. It is suggested that to the English department to adjust the academic activities with the learning styles to enhance educational achievement and encouraging students take responsibility in their whole learning.

Abstract

This research concerns with the analysis of feminist characters in Kate Chopin’s work. The purpose of the research is to describe the feminist characters of Kate Chopin’s The Awakening short stories by analyzing the main female characters as feminist characters and the contribution of the feminist characters to the development of the plot. The research question of this research are: how is the feminist character reflected on Kate Chopin’s The Awakening, and how do the feminist characters affect the development of the plot in Kate Chopin’s The Awakening short stories. The design of the research is a descriptive design. The finding of this research showed that from the characters existed in Kate Chopin’s The Awakening, feminist characters is Edna Pontellier. She was considered feminist from her conversation, actions of disregarding patriarchy and social boundaries toward women, an effort to complete self-rights, self-needs, and her inner thought about freedom and self-autonomy. Also, this research showed that Edna Pontellier feminist characters have a contribution to the development of the plot of the stories. Her feminist characteristics and behavior affect to the plot. The feminist characters’ thought and attitude play important in changing the mood of the characters’ action so that making the plot developed
